Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

A Limon province on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a beach lover’s paradise.. Head into any of the towns along Costa Rica’s Southern Caribbean Coast and you will find yourself in what can only be described as mini Jamaica’s with dreadlocked Rastafarians, reggae and calypso music being played in the streets, delicious Costa Rican Creole cooking aromas, and a confusing mix of a Spanish – English dialect that is spoken here. Puerto Viejo is one of the most happenin’ spots in Costa Rica. The discos are hopping, and, on peak weekends, you can’t find a room to save your soul. Nonetheless, it is low-key and funky. (Vultures hop around on the streets, taking reluctant flight only when you approach within a meter or two.) The surfer, backpacker, and counterculture crowds have firmly rooted here and dominate the scene, having settled and established bistros and restaurants alongside the locals. In addition, nearby Cahuita National Park and Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge offers visitors a chance to observe the region’s stunning wildlife, both of which are a short drive away.
